Kevin Bartlett Reserve

One could have been forgiven for assuming the Green Gully Cavaliers were playing a feeder club at Kevin Bartlett Reserve. With no less than four former Richmond players in the starting line-up. On the night, players Nick Robinson and Steve Burton had certainly come home to roost.

With only five minutes on the clock, a surprising blunder from a highly reputable Richmond defense, gifted Andy Vargas the opportunity to dash down the left wing and supply Nick Robinson with a perfect opportunity finish past Richmond goalkeeper Stjepan Gal. It was the perfect way to start the match, after Gully's disappointing first round result last weekend at home to Hume City.

The Cavaliers continued to pepper the Richmond goal, and with only around twenty minutes played, Steve Burton got onto a loose ball poorly headed away from a Gully corner kick, and put Richmond backs to the wall with a second goal for the visitors. It could have been more for the away side, but at halftime, the Cavaliers were looking the goods. The Gully midfield, consisting of Jeffrey Fleming, Andy Vargas, Graham Hockless and Jonathan Munoz simply destroyed Richmond in the first half, and it was very hard to see the home team coming back after the halftime break.

Cavaliers Get First Three Points For 2010

For a brief moment, it did look like Richmond might just make an unlikely comeback. Dean Fak was penalised for a soft tackle on Daniel Visevic, and the Richmond youngster pulled a goal back with a sublime freekick from 25 yards, placed ever so perfectly into the top right corner.

However, it was Gully's night. Straight after the Richmond goal Andy Vargas played an intelligent ball out to Munoz on the wing, and Munoz's header found Nick Robinson. Robinson beat his marker for strength and toe-pocked his second goal for the night.

Speaking after the match, Peter Ollerton stated in an interview to be aired next Saturday morning at 10:30am on Channel 31, that last weekend Nick Robinson was still overcoming jet lag after only recently returning from overseas, and that this week he obviously was in better condition and a match winner.
