McDonald’s Kanga Cup first-timers Green Gully FC under-14 Boys have come away with a convincing 3-0 victory over the Brindabella Blues in the Plate division at Calwell on Monday.
Despite the score line, Blues goalkeeper Nathan Alferink was the star of the show with a string of first-class saves that frustrated Green Gully throughout the second half.
The boys in green – who have travelled up for the first time from Melbourne - got off to the perfect start, scoring through an own goal in the 10th minute.
However, it could have been much worse for the Blues, as Green Gully missed several other early chances due to some brave defending and some excellent goalkeeping from Alferink.
But all was to be forgiven soon after as the Melburnians doubled their advantage on the 12-minute mark.
Dmitri Fokianos, who eventually finished the match with a brace, tapped home into an empty net following a well worked move from Green Gully. His coach, Mark Desieno was pleased with the team’s overall effort.
“They moved the ball around really well, we pressed hard and tackled hard so we can’t complain,” he said.
“We’re really excited to be here for our first time. Hopefully the boys will do well and have lots of fun, so we’re definitely looking to get something out of the week.”
Desieno then introduced Jarvis Gardner, who is eligible for the under-12s, in the second half and he caused the Blues defence headaches with his lightning pace.
However, it was Fokianos who stepped up to the mark again with 10 minutes remaining to make the score 3-0.
Brindabella coach Wayne Rose said he was pleased with his side despite the result.
“Considering we were a few players short I think we did quite OK. These Melbourne teams are always a different kettle of fish,” he said.
“But the kids are absolutely loving the tournament so far. Boys will be boys so this is a great opportunity for them to have fun.”
