A five goal blitz from the Green Gully Cavaliers secured third place for season 2010. It was the Melbourne Knights, relieved at having just survived one of the closest relegation battles in VPL history that let down their guard against a team itching for its first finals success in five years.

Gully midfielder Graham Hockless opened the scoring after about fifteen minutes of play. Ironically, it was the Melbourne Knights who did most of the attacking early on, Knights forward Townson struck the Gully crossbar after just five minutes of play, and there were numerous other chances that the Gully defense just managed to scramble to safety. Hockless’ goal was perfectly placed into the back top corner past young Knights goalkeeper Hrastov.

Matthew Sanders punished sloppy defending on two occasions prior to half time, the first came from a tackle, turn and shot, the second a header at the back post.
Just minutes into the second half, Graham Hockless scored his second and Gully’s fourth, his firm shot on goal caught Hrastov off guard, and Gully’s Steve Burton scored from a freekick taken quickly on the edge of the Knights penalty area.

Gully Celebrate

It was a very promising return of form and return to the starting line-up for Graham Hockless, just one week out from the finals. “The coaching staff make the decisions (on the lineup), an when you are left out of the team, you just have to cop it on the chin.” Stated Graham.

Another impressive inclusion in the starting eleven was defender Cameron Drake, filling in for an injured Ryan Ollerton. Cameron played his first full game since round five earlier this year.

The Cavaliers will travel to Hume next weekend for the Qualifying Final. Kick-Off Date and Time to be confirmed by the FFV.
