Players final words before kick-off

New boy Graham Hockless made an impressive start for the Green Gully Cavaliers, but it was not enough to salvage a result for the home team. Talking after the match, Graham was quick to state his disappointment at losing in his first official league match for his new club;
"I won't be going home tonight thinking about my goal, but rather thinking about what I need to do to help Gully win."

Gully started the match well, having the advantage of the wind in the first half, and putting Hume goalkeper Lou Acevski under much pressure. New Gully striker Gary Wales was in the thick of the action, but could not find a decisive touch to get the ball into the back of the Hume goal. Gully started the match with four new faces from the team that played Hume City in the finals series in 2009. Kyrakos Gerohchristodoulou played in goals, and Jonathan Munoz played as right midfielder, along side Hockless and Wales.

2009 Green Gully Player of the Year - Andy Vargas

Munoz linked up well with Andy Vargas in the first half, and a lot of Gully's attacking moves come down the right wing. Against the run of play, Hume were awarded a penalty after half an hour. Zoran Petrevski did well to place the ball inside the righ post, however Gully keeper Gerohchristodoulou pulled off a remarkable save.

After halftime, Hume City lifted their game. Tansel Baser scored rocket volley in the 55th minute, however Gully's Graham Hockless equalised with a fine individual strike on goal shortly after to restore parity. Hume brought on Ross Thompson on the hour and within ten minutes, Ross found himself sent off after a clash with Hockless.

Just as supporters thought the game would have fallen into Gully's hands, Hume continued unfazed by their setback, taking the lead with a Ritchie Cardozo backpost header. Despite being a player down, the Hume City forward managed to find plenty of space at the backpost and give the visitors an unlikely lead.

Gully coach Peter Ollerton swapped Matthew Sanders for new forward Nick Robinson, and Jonathan Munoz for yet another new Gully player in Joshua Groenewald. Jeffrey Fleming came close to equalising with some five minutes left on the clock, but Gully were ineffective as the final whistle blew. Peter Ollerton refused to comment to local newspapers after the match.

Under 21's go down 0-2

New Gully Under 21 coach Lubo Lapsansky's team were also unstuck by the travelling Hume City, losing 0-2 in his first match in charge. Gully will travel to Richmond on Friday night in round 2 of the VPL.
